If you choose a Pro or a Special package with us, you will always be sent a JPG and a PNG file. Sometimes we get asked what the difference is. And we can image that very well. In this blog, we’ll explain the difference between a JPG and a PNG file and tell you everything you need to know about these extensions.

JPG and PNG are two types of file types. Both are used for images, such as your logo. But of course there are differences between a JPG file and a PNG file, otherwise they wouldn’t have come up with two extensions for it. We briefly describe the characteristics of each file type below.

When do you use JPG files?

A JPG (also known as JPEG) is an extension used primarily for photos. When you save a file as JPG, it is compressed. The image is then saved smaller than the original, so you don’t have to deal with very heavy files. But that also means that you lose quality, for example, in photos. But because it’s not often obvious with photos, you can use JPGs for photo files.

But this also applies to logos, like the file you get from us. A JPG is used as well when the transparent parts of your logo must remain white. The nice thing is that JPG files are often smaller. So you can use them very well on your site, but also in Word documents or Powerpoints, for example.

When do you use PNG files?

A PNG file makes a file smaller too, but retains its quality. Lines and drawings in your logo are therefore always sharply defined. PNG files can also be used in Word documents, Powerpoints, and on your website. A major advantage of PNG files is that the background of a PNG file can be made transparent. This is easy if, for example, you want to paste your logo into another image, or place it over something. You can’t do that with a JPG file.

The difference between JPG and PNG

At first glance it may seem that PNG files offer you more options. However, PNG is not always the best choice. The main difference between JPG and PNG is that the transparent parts of your logo are automatically filled with white when you save it. With a PNG they remain transparent.

And the difference between JPG and PNG is mainly the size of the file. Because a PNG is a more versatile file, it is also often ‘heavier’. So you’re quickly dealing with four times more MBs per image than with a JPG. Do you use many images in a presentation or on your website? Then it is important to make sure your devices can handle all those MBs.
